Hello There,

It has been a busy week in Canadian immigration, with major developments across Express Entry, international student rules, provincial nominations, and IRCC processing times.

Here is your quick roundup of the biggest immigration stories from this week.

1) Proposed Express Entry changes

Fresh details emerged this week about a proposed Express Entry overhaul that could simplify eligibility into a single high-skilled program and significantly recalibrate CRS scoring. The proposals discussed during consultations suggest possible changes to minimum language requirements, work experience rules, job-offer points, and even the future of the 600-point provincial nomination bonus. Nothing is final yet, but these proposals could eventually become one of the biggest Express Entry reforms in years. (Read full story here)

2) International students no longer need a separate co-op work permit

IRCC has officially removed the requirement for a separate co-op work permit for eligible post-secondary international students whose programs include mandatory work placements. The change took effect on April 1, 2026, and marks a major administrative simplification for students completing internships or co-op terms as part of their studies. (Read full story here)

3) Ontario issued 1,828 invitations in one day across four OINP draws

Ontario delivered one of the biggest provincial immigration updates of the week by issuing 1,828 invitations to apply across four targeted OINP draws on April 8. The volume and breadth of the draws underline how aggressively the province is targeting labour shortages and in-demand occupations right now. (Read full story here)

4) Latest IRCC processing times show faster citizenship but slower waits elsewhere

IRCC’s latest processing-time update showed sharp contrasts across application types. Citizenship grants are moving faster, but some other streams have worsened significantly, including Quebec parents’ and grandparents’ sponsorship and visitor record extensions. For applicants waiting on files, this was one of the most practical immigration updates of the week. (Read full story here)

5) Our New analysis says Canada may need to raise immigration again sooner than expected

One of our most discussed immigration analysis pieces this week argued that Canada’s weak growth, population decline, and negative natural population change could force the country to increase immigration levels again sooner than expected. It is not a policy announcement, but it taps directly into the growing debate over where Canada’s immigration levels plan may head next. (Read full story here)

What to watch next

The next week is expected to bring a series of Express Entry draws starting Monday with a PNP Express Entry draw. At the same time, provincial programs and IRCC processing updates continue to create real openings and real risks depending on your profile. (Immigration News Canada)
